A Practical Alternative to Asphalt for Longer Driveways and Access Roads
Bitumen spray sealing creates a sealed surface by applying a bitumen binder to prepared pavement and covering it with stone aggregate. Unlike hot mix asphalt, the materials are applied in separate layers rather than being mixed before installation.
Spray sealing is commonly used for rural driveways, acreage accessways and lower traffic roads where a full asphalt surface may not be necessary. It can provide a more economical surfacing option, particularly over larger areas.
A One Asphalt undertakes bitumen sealing and pavement preparation across South East Queensland. With over 30 years of experience in earthworks and asphalt construction, we understand the importance of ground conditions, compacted road base and drainage when preparing a surface for sealing.
Bitumen Spray Seal Driveways & Rural Accessways
Long gravel driveways can require regular grading and maintenance, especially where vehicle traffic creates ruts or rain washes loose material away. Bitumen spray sealing provides a sealed driving surface while retaining a textured stone finish.
A One Asphalt undertakes bitumen driveway sealing for rural homes, acreage properties and long accessways. Projects can involve upgrading an existing gravel driveway or constructing a new sealed entrance to a property.
The condition of the existing road base, driveway slope, drainage and vehicle use all influence the preparation required. Some driveways need reshaping, additional road base or repairs to damaged sections before sealing can begin.
Spray sealing is often worth considering where the length of the driveway makes full hot mix asphalt paving less economical.
Spray Sealing for Access Roads & Existing Pavements
Bitumen spray sealing is also used for private access roads, internal roads and suitable civil pavements. The surface needs to accommodate the vehicles using it, with particular attention to traffic loads, turning areas and drainage.
A spray seal can be constructed using a single application of bitumen and aggregate or a two coat treatment, where the specification calls for additional layers. The appropriate treatment depends on the pavement and its intended use.
Existing spray sealed surfaces can also be considered for resealing as they age. Where the underlying pavement remains sound, a new seal may restore the surface without full reconstruction. Areas with potholes, failed road base or significant deformation require repairs before another seal is applied.
Considering Bitumen Sealing for Your Driveway or Access Road?
If you have a long gravel driveway, a rural property entrance or an access road that needs sealing, the cost and suitability of different surfacing options are worth considering.
Bitumen spray sealing and hot mix asphalt have different finishes, construction methods and costs. The right option depends on your property and how the surface will be used.

Our Bitumen Spray Sealing Process
1. Site Assessment & Quote
We discuss the driveway or road, its dimensions, existing surface and expected vehicle use. The condition of the pavement, drainage and site access helps establish the preparation required and suitable sealing options.
2. Road Base Preparation
The surface is shaped and prepared before sealing. Work may include grading, repairing damaged areas, adding road base and compaction to establish suitable levels and drainage.
3. Bitumen & Aggregate Application
Bitumen binder is sprayed onto the prepared pavement, followed by a layer of stone aggregate. The aggregate is spread and rolled into the binder. Some projects may require a second coat depending on the specified treatment.
4. Final Checks & Completion
The sealed pavement is checked for surface coverage and areas requiring attention. Some loose stone can remain after application, and traffic may need to be restricted or controlled while the seal establishes.
