Proper Ground Preparation Makes a Difference to Your Pavement
Asphalt relies on the pavement beneath it to support vehicle loads and maintain a stable surface. Soft ground, inadequate compaction and poor drainage can contribute to movement, cracking and potholes, even when the asphalt itself has been laid correctly.
A One Asphalt undertakes earthworks and road base construction for residential, commercial and civil projects across South East Queensland. With over 30 years of experience in excavation and asphalt paving, we prepare sites for new driveways, car parks, access roads and other paved surfaces.
Our work includes removing existing material, establishing levels, preparing the underlying ground and constructing compacted road bases suited to the proposed pavement.
Excavation, Earthworks & Site Preparation
Before a new driveway, car park or road can be paved, the site needs to be prepared to the required levels. Existing surfaces, unsuitable material, slopes and drainage conditions can all affect the excavation and earthworks involved.
A One Asphalt undertakes excavation, grading and site preparation for residential driveways, rural accessways, commercial car parks and civil paving projects.
Work can include removing existing pavement, excavating to the required depth and shaping the ground for the proposed surface. Levels need to account for vehicle access, adjoining roads, garages, buildings and drainage points.
For existing pavements, excavation may also be required to remove failed sections before the road base and asphalt are reconstructed.
Road Base Construction & Pavement Preparation
The road base forms the supporting layer beneath an asphalt pavement. It distributes vehicle loads across the prepared ground and provides a stable foundation for the finished surface.
A One Asphalt constructs and repairs road bases for residential driveways, commercial car parks, industrial access roads and civil pavements. Work can involve placing suitable road base material in layers, shaping the pavement and compacting it to the required levels.
Depending on the project specifications, construction may include separate bottom and top road base courses, with compaction testing to check the prepared base meets the required standard.
The road base requirements depend on the ground conditions, expected traffic and intended use of the surface. Areas carrying heavy vehicles can place greater demands on the pavement than a standard residential driveway.
Drainage also needs consideration during construction. Water entering the pavement or collecting beneath the surface can weaken the supporting material and contribute to premature damage.
Planning Earthworks or Road Base Construction?
Whether you’re preparing a new driveway, developing a commercial site or rebuilding an existing pavement, understanding the ground conditions is an important starting point.
Excavation depth, road base requirements, drainage and site access can all influence the scope and cost of the work.
Tell Brett where the project is, what you’re planning to construct and whether there’s an existing surface to remove. We’ll discuss what’s involved and the next steps towards a quote.
Our Earthworks & Road Base Construction Process
1. Site Assessment & Quote
We discuss the proposed pavement, existing ground conditions, site access and intended vehicle use. Available site plans or construction specifications can help establish the excavation and preparation required.
2. Excavation & Ground Preparation
Existing material is removed where required, and the site is excavated and graded to establish the proposed pavement levels. Unsuitable or damaged sections of the existing ground may need further preparation.
3. Road Base Placement & Compaction
Road base material is placed, shaped and compacted to form the supporting pavement. The required construction depends on the ground conditions, traffic loads and project specifications.
4. Final Levels & Pavement Preparation
The prepared surface is checked for levels, drainage and connections to surrounding areas. Once the road base is ready, the project can proceed to asphalt paving or the specified surface treatment.
